History of Brigantine

• Brigantine is a city located on an island of the same name off the coast of Atlantic County, New Jersey. The island was originally settled by the Lenni-Lenape Native Americans, and the name "Brigantine" is derived from the word "burgee," which is the name the Lenape used to describe the island.

• In the 17th century, the island was discovered by European settlers, and it was used primarily for fishing and hunting. In the early 1700s, the island was surveyed by English land surveyor, George Keith, and a plan for a town was established. However, the town remained largely undeveloped for many years.

• In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Brigantine began to attract visitors as a seaside resort. A number of large hotels were built, and the population of the island began to grow. However, Brigantine remained a relatively small and isolated community until the 1950s, when a causeway was built connecting the island to the mainland. This made it much easier for people to travel to Brigantine, and the population of the island began to grow rapidly.

• In the 1960s and 1970s, Brigantine experienced a boom in real estate development, and many new houses and condos were built. Today, Brigantine is a popular tourist destination known for its beaches, fishing, boating, and other outdoor activities.
