History of Atlantic City

  • Atlantic City, located in southern New Jersey on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The area was first discovered by European settlers in the late 17th century, but it wasn't until the mid-19th century that the city began to take shape.

  • In 1854, a hotel called the "Belloe House" was built on the beach, which marked the start of Atlantic City's development as a seaside resort. The city officially incorporated in 1854, and by the 1870s, several more hotels had been built along the beach.

  • In 1878, the first boardwalk was constructed in Atlantic City, which quickly became a popular destination for tourists. The boardwalk was built to keep sand out of the hotels and to provide a place for people to stroll and enjoy the ocean view. The boardwalk quickly became a hub of activity, with shops, restaurants, and attractions lining its length.

  • In the late 1800s, Atlantic City became a popular destination for wealthy vacationers from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and other nearby cities. The city's popularity continued to grow throughout the early 1900s, and by the 1920s, it was known as the "Queen of Resorts" and the "Nation's Playground".

  • During the Prohibition era in the 1920s, Atlantic City became a popular destination for those looking to partake in illegal alcohol. This led to the rise of organized crime in the city and the establishment of several illegal casinos and speakeasies.

  • In the 1930s, the city began to decline in popularity as other beach destinations like Miami Beach and Coney Island began to rise in popularity. However, Atlantic City made a comeback in the 1970s when casino gambling was legalized in the city. This led to the construction of several large casino-hotels, including the Tropicana, the Borgata, and the Harrah's.

  • Today, Atlantic City continues to be a popular destination for tourists, with a mix of casinos, hotels, shops, and restaurants. The city also plays host to several annual events and conventions, including the Miss America pageant and the Atlantic City Airshow.
